Dark Wax is the secret behind that deeply beautiful, aged patina that makes a painted piece look as though it has lived a full and interesting life. Warmer and richer than Black Wax, it has a brown-toned depth that mimics the natural accumulation of age and use — settling into recesses, softening edges, and giving painted furniture a quality that simply cannot be rushed or faked any other way.

It is the wax that transforms English Yellow into something honeyed and complex, that gives Old White the warmth of aged parchment, and that makes Graphite feel like polished slate. Used over Clear Wax, it is entirely controllable — build it up gradually for a heavily aged effect, or apply sparingly for just a whisper of warmth and depth.

How to Use Dark Wax

Always apply Clear Wax first as a base coat — this protects the paint and gives you control over how the Dark Wax sits and blends. Apply Dark Wax with a wax brush or cloth, working it into the surface and into any recesses or moulding details. Buff back with a clean cloth to your desired depth. Work in small sections and build gradually — it is always easier to add more than to remove it. Allow to cure fully before use.

Common Questions About Annie Sloan Wax

What is the difference between Dark Wax and Black Wax?
Dark Wax has a warm brown tone that mimics natural ageing; Black Wax is cooler and more dramatic. Dark Wax is the more versatile of the two for creating an authentic aged patina.

Do I have to apply Clear Wax first?
Yes — always apply Clear Wax before Dark Wax. It acts as a barrier that gives you control and makes blending much easier.

How long does wax take to cure?
Allow 24 hours before light use and up to 5 days for full hardness on high-traffic surfaces.
