Black Wax is the most dramatic tool in the Annie Sloan finishing kit — and one of the most rewarding to use. Applied over Chalk Paint®, it deepens colour, adds shadow and age, and creates a finish that feels genuinely antique. It is the wax that turns a painted piece into something with a story.
Used sparingly, it settles into brushstrokes and recesses to add subtle definition and depth. Used more generously, it transforms pale colours into something moody and complex — Old White becomes aged linen, Antoinette takes on a smoky, shadowed quality, and dark colours like Graphite and Athenian Black become almost lacquer-like in their richness. It is endlessly versatile and entirely forgiving to work with.
How to Use Black Wax
Always apply Clear Wax first as a base coat — this gives you more control over the Black Wax and makes it easier to blend and remove if needed. Apply Black Wax sparingly with a wax brush or cloth, working it into the surface in circular motions. Buff back with a clean cloth to your desired depth. The more you buff, the subtler the effect; leave it less worked for something more dramatic. Allow to cure fully before use.
